We exclusively offer 14-karat gold jewelry for piercings. This is because 14-karat gold contains a substantial amount of pure gold while remaining sturdy enough for long-term wear in piercings.
Pure gold is 24-karat but is too soft for piercing jewelry, as high-purity gold easily bends. To strengthen it, other materials are combined with gold, lowering the karat count to 14. This process introduces trace materials, including a very small amount of nickel. While this level of nickel is too low to cause allergic reactions in most cases and is often claimed to be nickel-free, it may still trigger sensitivity in those with existing nickel allergies.
If you already have a nickel allergy, it’s best to avoid 14-karat gold jewelry. Even though nickel is present in minimal amounts (less than 1%), other metals like cobalt or palladium are also added, which may cause reactions in some individuals. However, for most people, if you can comfortably wear gold bracelets, rings, or necklaces, 14-karat gold is generally safe for piercings as well.
